Tournament of Minds

Tournament of Minds (ToM) is an Australian educational program developed for students across all sectors of primary and secondary school education. Team members work together for six weeks – without assistance from teachers, parents or peers – to solve a challenging problem within strict requirements. Teams present their solutions dramatically to a judging panel and audience and complete an unseen Spontaneous Challenge, testing their teamwork and creativity skills.

In Tasmania, over 450 students from public, independent and Catholic schools participate every year, joining around 14,000 of their peers in Australia as well as an ever-increasing number of international schools.

Winning teams are invited to attend the Tournament of Minds International Final and this year Hobart is the host city. Nearly 500 students along with over 100 teachers plus proud parents are descending on southern Tasmania, including five teams from New Zealand schools and a team travelling all the way from Hong Kong.  With the theme of ‘Into the Wild’, this Tournament is a celebration of the diversity of Tasmanian landscapes.

The first day, Friday October 25, is an activity day – welcoming the winning teams ‘into the wild’ at the Opening Ceremony at City Hall, and acknowledging the traditional owners, the palawa people, of lutruwita (Tasmania). Teams will then break out to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and Richmond for the afternoon, to explore, experience and make new friends.

Saturday October 26 is Tournament Day, held at UTAS and Mount Carmel College, and starts at 8am. Teams receive a challenge and have three hours and ten minutes to understand and develop their solution, and participate in a spontaneous challenge. Then, after lunch, each team presents to the judging panel and audience. It is a demanding day and a tremendous opportunity for students to interact with and compete against their peers. The day concludes with the closing ceremony, full of excitement and energy and enormous morale as – whether you’re a winning team or not – the pleasure and benefit is from being there.

Tournament of Minds is sport for the mind. While we celebrate intellectual excellence, we also value and reward teamwork, fun, creativity, originality and respect.
