Just over a century ago, Douglas Mawson set out from Tasmania with an intrepid band of brothers, explorers – chasing a seemingly impossible goal.
Together with their pack of faithful huskies, they headed south, guided only by the stars –uplifted by the vision of southern lights, a familiar purple and green cheerleader in the navy night sky.
Their story was of hardship, teamwork, danger, adventure. Bound together like brothers, they were a pack, loyal to the end.
And through their story, we understand our own. Tasmanians, surrounded by the same Southern Ocean, watched over by the same southern lights – our light. And like the huskies, we stay true to our pack with a fierce loyalty, and the relentless commitment to explore, survive, and win.
Born out of a desire to grow professional sport in Tasmania, the Southern Huskies are pursuing a place in the Australian NBL. The journey towards this goal has taken the Huskies into New Zealand, signing a five year deal to play in the Sal’s NBL. An unscheduled expansion of the franchise has taken place with the development of the Hobart Huskies, with Men’s and Women’s teams playing in the Victorian Elite League in 2019.
The Southern Huskies play their games in both the North and the South of Tasmania at The Derwent Entertainment Centre in Hobart and The Silverdome in Launceston.
